Pop, pop, pop

Usually we’ll just find a clutch of eggs whilst checking the nesting boxes in the morning. So, when one of our female beardies started laying her eggs in the middle of a busy Saturday afternoon, we thought it was a great opportunity to grab the camera and share it with you all.

Also, by luck, she dug her pit in the open end of the nesting box so we didn’t have to disturb her at all to get the footage.

Calci-Worm

But what are Calci-Worms? Calci-Worms are the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). As larvae they store high levels of calcium for future pupation as they change into adult flies. As well as being high in calcium, they are also high in fat and protein making them an extremely rich and nutritious diet.

I see Calci-Worms more as a weekly treat rather than a daily diet. Or, for ‘feeding up’ recently poorly pets or females that have recently produced eggs, a health booster if you like.

As with any new food, it MUST pass the taste test! So, I put some small Calci-Worms in with some 4 week old bearded dragons to see what they think. This is genuinely the first time they have ever seen these, so they are a little confused at first! The video is below… I think Calci-Worms look like a superb food, but I’d love to hear what you think so please try some and get back to me .

Sam and her mum have a reptile sanctuary with over 500 animals at home. Many are rescues but given the right conditions and care it’s inevitable that at some point healthy animals will breed.
One of her female Bearded Dragons laid a clutch of eggs about 2 months ago. We put them in our incubator and waited. A few days ago they started to emerge from their eggs. It’s important to leave them in the incubation box with the other eggs as they will also stimulate them to hatch.
They’re not all out yet but those the ones that have hatched are doing very well and will be left in a viv in our holding room until they have grown and are ready to go on sale.
Bearded Dragons are very popular pets so we’d love to hear from anybody else who is breeding them at home!

In fact, after some excavation we found a total of 27 eggs in the nesting box! The eggs have now been transferred to our nearly full incubator where they will be for the next couple of months before hatching. This is the female’s first clutch which can sometimes not be 100% perfect but we are confident there will be more babies running around our vivs in 6-8 weeks.

Nearly There!

One of the most satisfying things about working with reptiles is breeding your own stock. Another success story of our captive breeding programs was the hatching of our German Giant Bearded Dragon babies!

Bearded Dragons are our favourite reptile pet and judging by their popularity they are yours too. German Giant Bearded Dragons are a variety of Bearded Dragons that get big, very big!

Ahh.. space

It usually takes about 2 months for the eggs to hatch once they’ve been laid so we knew there was a chance that this could be baby week.  Everyday we checked their box in the incubator but no joy, until yesterday! Four young lizards were running around happy as anything. It was important to leave them in there as they would stimulate the remaining four eggs to hatch.

Two more of the eggs also hatched yesterday, the remaining two hatched today. We are pleased to say that all eight are thriving. They have been moved to their own vivarium where they are enjoying basking and chancing small crickets. Their parents are the Red Hypo German Giant variety so we expect them to grow into absolute beauties. In our eyes they already are.
