ProRep Beardie Life Substrate 10kg

ProRep Beardie Life is part of the species specific life series of substrates and has been designed to meet the needs of Bearded Dragons and other desert species. In the wild there are few species that actually live on pure sand and so Beardie Life has been designed to mimic the sandy soil more typical of desert habitats. Beardie Life contains a mixture of sand and soil to create a realistic looking and feeling substrate which encourages natural behaviour, such as digging and foraging, and which aids the maintenance of a suitable environment. The addition of soil to the mixture reduces the risk of impaction sometimes seen with pure sand, while enhancing the moisture retention ability of the substrate.

ProRep Bio Life Desert Substrate, 10 litre

Bio active substrates are designed to allow the maintenance of living ecosystems inside the terrarium. ProRep Bio-Life substrate is carefully blended from a mixture of ingredients to provide the optimum combination of structure, PH and nutrient content for plants from arid environments. When used in a planted terrarium, a living ecosystem can be created where the terrarium occupants co-exist with the plants and microorganisms to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. The microorganisms digest waste material, which is in turn taken up by the plants for growth, locking away harmful nitrogen while creating a living, natural habitat. Because an arid environment set up is dry, with low humidity, then it can be more difficult to maintain than forest set ups. With the proper design however, it is possible to recreate a moist zone in the base of the terrarium to mimic the moisture commonly found underground in deserts. This moist zone provides a reservoir of water which plants and microorganisms can access, while the surface of the substrate remains dry.

  • Optimum structure, PH and nutrient content
  • Great for desert species
  • Can be planted into
  • Best kept dry
  • 10L bag

ProRep Bio Life Drainage Medium, 10 litre

ProRep Drainage Medium is produced by firing ash at a high temperature. As it fires the air bubbles in the material expand to form a honeycomb of interconnected chambers and create an inert, hard and lightweight material that will hold moisture and provides a large surface area for the growth of beneficial bacteria. Used in the base of bio-active terrariums it creates a reservoir of water which moistens the substrate from below and helps to create a natural moisture gradient. The large surface area within each ball provides the ideal habitat for beneficial bacteria which will neutralise potentially harmful waste products formed within the ecosystem.

  • Inert, hard and lightweight
  • Holds Moisture
  • Large surface area for beneficial bacteria
  • Used in the base of bio-active terrariums

ProRep Straw Bedding, 25 Litre

ProRep Straw Bedding can be used for tortoises as well as many other large snakes and lizards that originate from arid habitats. It is made from compressed straw pellets to provide a soft bedding that should not cause impaction if eaten.

Directions: Spread the substrate evenly over the bottom of the enclosure to a depth of at least 1-2? (2.5-5cm).

Spot-clean daily and completely replace every two or three weeks, or more frequently if it becomes heavily soiled or wet. This substrate should not be used wet.

If you are using an under-tank heatmat as your heat source do not use a thick layer of Straw Bedding as this may cause the heatmat to overheat.

  • Straw Bedding
  • Great for large lizards and tortoises
  • Best when 1-2'' deep and evenly spread
  • Spot clean daily
  • Completely replace every 2-3 weeks

Exo Terra Equatorial Forest Floor Dual Layer Large

The Exo Terra Equatorial Forest Floor is a multi layer substrate that allows you to recreate the forest floor as found in natural equatorial forests. The forest floor is one of the most distinctive features of the equatorial forest ecosystem. It usually consists of two major layers; The top layer mainly consisting of fresh leaf litter The base layer consists of rich organic matter - usually decomposed leaves & wood The top layer consists of sun dried decorative Ardisia leaves from a sustainable resource. With this decorative top layer you can actually create the soft floor covering found in natural equatorial forests. The Ardisia leaves provide a soft layer for animals to burrow and cover their secret hideout. Most reptiles and amphibians forage the forest floor in search of food and water. The top layer covers the actual substrate underneath to facilitate its moisture retention and prevent the soil from drying out.

Aspen

Aspen shavings and chips are a great choice for burrowing species and those with soft underbellies. This substrate is particularly useful with smaller snakes and tortoises. The wood will absorb moisture and clump together making spot cleaning very easy.

Bark Chips

Bark chips are a darker wood substrate and are great for enclosures that require some humidity. The bark can be sprayed in the morning and will remain moist throughout the day. Here at the Northampton Reptile Centre we use bark chips with our Crested geckos and arboreal amphibians.

Beech Woodchips

Beech woodchips are a great loose substrate as they are cheap and easy to clean. The coarse beech woodchips are especially great for lizards as they are quite large pieces making them highly unlikely to be accidentally ingested. Here at the Northampton Reptile Centre we keep our bearded dragons, european tortoises and small snakes on beech woodchip.

Bioactive Substrates

Bioactive substrates are a great way to create your own bioactive set up. These soil based substrates are already packed with nutrients so plants and cleaner colonies like woodlice or springtails can be added straight into the enclosure. These are a great way to create a naturalistic enclosure.

Carpets

Carpets are a good option for animals that have a habit of eating loose substrates. They provide a soft linging to the floor without the risk of accidental ingestions and impactions. They can be washed and re-used making them great value for money.

Clay

Clay based substrates are great for desert dweilling reptiles. If left loose the clay can be easily pushed and dug out allowing the animal to naturally burrow. Moisture can also be added to the clay to mould structures that will hold their shape.

Drainage Substrate

Large gravel, ceramic or pebble substrates designed to allow drainage from a top layer. Particularly useful when creating a damp naturalistic enclosure for terrestrial frogs and toads. The drainage layer is usually placed below a layer of top soil.

Hemp

Hemp based substrates are great for tortoises and soft bellied snakes. This substrate can be easily pushed and dug out allowing the animal to naturally burrow. Hemp bedding is particularly useful with tortoises and snakes that require a dry enclosure.

Incubation

A range of incubation mediums to meet the needs of most reptile eggs. Vermiculite can be prepared and will retain a large amount of moisture releasing it to increase humidity over the incubation period whereas pearlite comes premixed.

Jungle Substrates

These jungle substrates are great for retaining moisture and providing a moderate humidity. From coconut husk through soil and bark there is a perfect substrate for all jungle dwelling species.

Pebbles and Gravel

Pebbles and gravel substrates are great for lining the bottom of submerged enclosures. They do not give off particulalte dirt and will sink and stay down making them perfect for turtle tanks or aquatic amphibian enclosures.

Soil

A range of soil based substrates designed to retain a large amount of moisture and keep environments damp. A great option for amphibians and reptiles that would live in wet places.

Straw

Straw based substrates are a great option for tortoises and other large herbivorous reptiles. Not only is it soft underfoot it is also a natural source of roughage for European and African tortoises.

Substrate Scoops

A fast and efficient way to remove excrement from fine substrates without having to get hands on. These scoops are particularly useful when using sands and soils.

Moss

Dry, compact and live moss products. These are great for increasing the humidity in enclosures. They can be used as a substrate for amphibians that need to stay damp or can be added to soil or bark chip to raise humidity even further. Here at the Northampton Reptile Centre we use moss in our snake shedding boxes and humid microclimates.

Sand

A range of sand based substrates for desert dwelling species. These range from play sand to calci-sands and vitamin sands containing for or less minerals as required. They are a great loose substrate for lizards from arid regions that love to bury themselves.

Other substrates

A range of alternative beddings for less common and aquatic species. A wide variety from large pebbles through corn cob granules and clay.
