Springtails - Colony

Springtails as Reptile Food

Our springtails are the main cleaner crew for bio-active enclosures. They are very small and hard to catch making them a great cleaner crew for larger amphibians and reptiles. They can also be fed to very small amphibians and invertebrates in place of flies but will be a bit of a smaller meal. Our springtails are dispatched direct from the breeder and will be gut loaded before packing to make sure that they are as nutritious as possible on arrival.

Springtails are the perfect size for hatchling amphibians very small fish and juvenile insectivorous invertebrates (e.g. mantis and tarantulas). In store we use the springtails with our baby spiders, baby frogs and mantis

This product will be delivered in a plastic container. The bottom of the tub is covered in nutrient rich soil based substrate. The sides of the plastic tub are perforated to provide maximum ventilation with minimum risk of escape. The colony is usually hatched in transit and should be fully populated within a week.

You'll love them because:
  • We guarantee freshness or your money back
  • They are farm bred in ethical conditions.
  • They are pre-fed to ensure your reptile is getting a healthy and nutritious meal.
  • Delivered straight to your door in good time.
We recommend springtails for the following animal types:
  • Baby Frogs
  • Small spiders
  • Small mantis
  • Baby toads

Each order of livefood will also come with a free ProRep Jelly pot. The springtails will need some source of hydration soon after hatching. We have found that they don't do very well with open bodies of water so the jelly pot is an effective alternative. Simply put the jelly pot into your tub after a day or two of receiving the item.

If you want to keep the springtails as nutritious as possible we would recommend you continue to feed them on a nutritious vegetable and fruit diet or with insect foods. For more information on the diet please consult our livefood caresheet.

Taurrus Live Predatory Mites - Large

The Problems Caused by Reptile Mites

Snake mites (Ophionyssus natricis) are one of the biggest killers of reptiles in captivity. Mite infestations can be difficult to control, let alone eradicate. The mites feed from their hosts's blood supply removing blood and vital nutrients leaving the reptile agitated and anaemic. This makes the reptile far more susceptible to illness, and as the parasites also introduce diseases into the snakes blood supply while feeding, the snake may eventually die. Parasites are conventionally controlled with toxic pesticides such as neonicotinoids and phyretroids, these chemicals however have side effects for the reptiles and the parasite builds resistance against it over time.

Taurrus is a revolutionary natural way to control parasitic mites in the habitat of the reptile. The Taurrus predatory mites feed on various reptile parasites such as the O. natricis snake mite. Taurrus does not feed on reptiles or mammals and is 100% safe for you, your pet and the environment.

The Natural Solution to Reptile Mites

Taurrus is a living organism (predatory mite) that is able to control various species of mites and terrarium parasites. Taurrus is a natural enemy of the reptile parasite (Ophionyssus natricis), consuming reptile parasites as well as other acari parasite species.

Taurrus mite predators are very small and measure less than 1 mm in adult stage. The larvae are white and adults are orange to brown in colour. They are able to live during a few weeks and reproduce in the areas where the find their prey. Despite its small size, the Taurrus predator acts aggressively and is able to attack and kill preys that are 3 to 4 times bigger in size.

As many species of small arthropod, Taurrus are comfortable in a warm and humid environment. For this reason a terrarium is an ideal environment to establish a predatory mite population, particularly when a natural substrate such as coco fiber, peat or moss is present. Once released, the microscopic predators will actively seek and consume parasites. Once eliminated, the predators disappear naturally. The mode of action requires several days. After introduction of Taurrus, pest populations should be monitored: at first it will stabilize, and then gradually decline. In heavy infestations, several releases may be needed to eradicate all parasites.

Treats up tp 10 vivariums curatively or up to 20 vivariums preventatively.

  • Natural snake mite predators
  • Effective on snakes, lizards and tortoises
  • Kills all parasite stages including the eggs
  • Has no after effects and leaves no harmful residues
  • Safe for the creatures and the user

Bean Weevils - Culture

Bean Weavils as Reptile Food

Our bean weavils are the main staple of many invertebrate and amphibian diets. They are very small and hard to catch making them a great cleaner crew for larger reptiles. They can also be fed to very small amphibians and invertebrates in place of flies but will be a bit of a tougher meal. Our bean weavils are dispatched direct from the breeder and will be gut loaded before packing to make sure that they are as nutritious as possible on arrival.

This product will be delivered in a plastic container. The bottom of the tub is covered in beans, eggs and larvae. Above substrate are egg box pieces or wood shavings to provide space for the weavils when they hatch. The sides of the plastic tub are perforated to provide maximum ventilation with minimum risk of escape. The colony usually hatches it's first generation within a few days of arriving and if kept properly more will hatch within a week or so.

Springtails

Springtails are a useful food for people who breed many species of amphibians (particularly poison dart frogs) where the newly metamorphosed froglets are too small to take even micro crickets. They also form an essential part of a bio-active forest terrarium where they help to clean up waste and detritus from the tank.

Whiteworms

Whiteworms can be placed in small amphibian enclosures and aswell as being a snack for your pet they will also break down waste and help to recycle nutrients. For this reason they make an excellent addition to natural vivariums that incorperate soils and plants.

Small Worms

Our worms are farm bred in ethical conditions and fed on a completely organic diet. The worms are well fed before packing and gut loaded to ensure they are as nutritious as possible when they get to your door. We are certain you will love our worms due to their great nutritional properties, how active they are and the speed of our delivery service.

Bean Weevils

We send our bean weavil cultures in a large square plastic box with small airholes. The bottom of the box is lined with beans holding the bean weavil larvae. Above the layer of beans the box is filled with thin curved strips of wood. Over the course of a week or so the bean weavils will hatch and move up into the wood leaving you with a tub full of weavils.
