Bearded Dragon Care Sheet

Natural History

Bearded dragons are naturally found throughout the hot outback desert of Australia. There are several closely related species referred to as bearded dragons but the one most commonly kept as a pet is the 'central bearded dragon' Pogona vitticeps.

Often seen climbing upon rocky outcrops or fallen trees, bearded dragons love basking in the Australian sun. However, they will usually retreat into a burrow during the hottest part of the day.

The natural bearded dragon habitat most commonly consists of compacted sandy clay with scrubland plants, succulents and cacti.
