Snails as Reptile Food

Our edible snails can be part of a varied livefood diet of many reptile and amphibian diets.

They are easy to catch, highly nutritious and (once through the crunchy shell) quite easy to digest, making them perfect treats. They are dispatched directly from the breeder and will be gut-loaded before packing to make sure that they are as nutritious as possible on arrival.

Edible snails can be quite big and have a hard outer shell making them perfect for larger reptiles like adult bearded dragons, skinks and turtles. In the store we feed edible snails as an occasional treat for many of our insectivorous reptiles. They are also particularly good for frilled dragons and blue-tongue skinks.

You'll love them because:

  • We guarantee freshness or your money back.

  • They are farm-bred in ethical conditions.

  • They are pre-fed to ensure your reptile is getting a healthy and nutritious meal.

  • Delivered straight to your door in good time.

Packaging

The edible snails arrive in a ventilated plastic tub containing a section of egg-box cardboard. Small air holes along the sides provide airflow while keeping the insects safely contained.

The egg-box increases surface area, giving the insects space to spread out and reducing the risk of overcrowding or trampling.

In warmer months, the outer cardboard box may have extra perforations for cooling. In colder months, we may include a plain white heat pack to help maintain a suitable temperature during transit.

Feeding Guide

If you want to keep the snails as nutritious as possible, we recommend feeding them a healthy diet right up until they're used.

  • Offer fresh leafy greens, carrots, squash, or sweet potato, these provide hydration and essential nutrients.

  • You can also use specialist insect foods or gut-loading diets to boost their nutritional value for your reptile.

  • Remove any uneaten food daily to keep the enclosure clean and prevent mould or decay.

Well-fed snails make for excellent food and are far more beneficial, helping support your reptile’s health and digestion. For more information on their diet, please consult our livefood care sheet. If you’re looking for other types of reptile food, we also stock frozen, animal-specific, vegetation and supplement options.

Animal Suitability

We recommend hatchling locusts for the following animal types:

  • Turtles

  • Water Dragons

  • Bearded Dragons

  • Blue-tongued Skinks

  • Frilled Dragons

Care Instructions

Keep edible snails at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or draughts. Add fresh food at regular intervals to keep them healthy and active.

Avoid overcrowding by providing size-appropriate housing with plenty of hiding spots.

Looking after your live food properly helps ensure your lizard or other pet gets the best nutrition possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of edible snails are most common?

The most common species used as food are Helix aspersa (garden snails) and Helix pomatia (Roman snail). Both are widely farmed across Europe and valued for their rich snail meat and strong shells. They are the same snails often prepared as escargot.

Do edible snails have a good nutritional profile for reptiles?

Yes, many reptiles eat snails as a high-value food source. The protein-rich meat and calcium-dense snail shells offer excellent nutritional benefits. Once past the crunchy exterior, snails are easy to digest and ideal as an occasional treat alongside insects and other staple feeders.

How big do edible snails get?

Depending on the common species, edible snails can grow to a few inches in length. Larger varieties like the Roman snail have thick, durable shells. This makes them a good size and especially suitable for bigger reptiles such as adult turtles and skinks.

Are sea snails also edible for reptiles and amphibians?

Yes, some species of sea snails are edible and are consumed by various animals, including certain reptiles and amphibians. Sea snails and land snails have both been part of diets in Europe and other regions for centuries, but it is important to note that not all sea snails are suitable or safe for reptile or amphibian consumption.
