Golden Fruit Flies as Reptile Food

Our golden fruit flies are part of the main livefood diet of many reptile and amphibian diets.

They are easy to catch and highly nutritious. They are a great staple food for your reptile, amphibian, or invert. The fruit flies are dispatched directly from the breeder and will be gut-loaded before packing to make sure that they are as nutritious as possible on arrival.

In the store, we use the adult flies as staple food for our Dart Frogs, Mantises, and Spiders.

You'll love them because:

  • We guarantee freshness or your money back.

  • They are farm-bred in ethical conditions.

  • They are pre-fed to ensure your reptile is getting a healthy and nutritious meal.

  • Delivered straight to your door in good time.

Packaging

The golden fruit flies arrive in a ventilated plastic tub. Small air holes along the sides provide airflow while keeping the insects safely contained.

In warmer months, the outer cardboard box may have extra perforations for cooling. In colder months, we may include a plain white heat pack to help maintain a suitable temperature during transit.

Feeding Guide

If you want to keep the golden fruit flies as nutritious as possible, we recommend feeding them a healthy diet right up until they're used.

  • Offer fresh leafy greens, carrots, squash, or sweet potatoes; these provide hydration and essential nutrients.

  • You can also use specialist insect foods or gut-loading diets to boost their nutritional value for your reptile.

  • Remove any uneaten food daily to keep the enclosure clean and prevent mould or decay.

Well-fed golden fruit flies make for excellent food and are far more beneficial, helping support your reptile’s health and digestion. For more information on their diet, please consult our livefood care sheet. If you’re looking for other types of reptile food, we also stock frozen, animal-specific, vegetation, and supplement options.

Animal Suitability

We recommend golden fruit flies for the following animal types:

  • Dart Frogs

  • Slings

  • Mantises

  • Baby Amphibians

Care Instructions

Keep golden fruit flies at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or draughts. Add fresh food at regular intervals to keep them healthy and active.

Looking after your live food properly helps ensure your lizard or other pet gets the best nutrition possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are golden fruit flies and why are they good for reptiles?

Golden fruit flies are a much smaller species measuring around 1–2mm, making them ideal for small reptiles, amphibians, and inverts. They are highly nutritious, short lived, so they tend to be best when you have an immediate need , and provide an excellent staple food option. Many keepers prefer them over regular fruit flies due to their size and ease of use.

How do I keep golden fruit flies fresh and healthy?

Keep live flies at room temperature and provide a good mix of fresh vegetables for ongoing supply. Add a slice of banana in the tub to keep them fresh but remove old food daily to prevent mould and ensure the flies remain active and nutritious.

How do golden fruit flies compare to other species like Drosophila melanogaster or Drosophila hydei?

Golden fruit flies are a much smaller species, perfect for hatchlings and tiny animals, whereas Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei are larger options. Having two different ways to feed - smaller or larger flies - lets you match the prey size to your reptile’s development. Many keepers use both species as part of a balanced, nutritious livefood mix.

What animals benefit most from Golden fruit flies?

They are perfect for small reptiles, dart frogs, baby amphibians, mantises, and other species that need much smaller species of livefood. Because they are nutritious and easy to catch, they are a traditional way to support young or delicate pets. They also make a great alternative to other livefood like crickets or worms.

Why choose your golden fruit flies over others?

Our fresh fruit flies and all other livefood stock are ethically bred, gut-loaded, used daily in our store, and covered by our Livefood Freshness Guarantee for quality assurance.
