Shield Fern (Polystichum setiferum) is a graceful, evergreen fern known for its delicate, feathery fronds that create a soft, lush appearance. Native to temperate regions, it typically grows in shady woodland areas and thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Its fronds are pinnate, meaning the leaflets are arranged on either side of the central stem, giving them a fern-like, feathery texture. The fronds often have a distinctive, shield-like shape at the base, which is where the plant gets its common name.
Shield Ferns are relatively low-maintenance. They thrive in cool, moist environments and prefer consistent moisture, though they can tolerate drier conditions once established.
