String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii) - Large Hanging
String of hearts (Ceropegia woodii) is a succulent plant that originates from South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is known for its trailing nature, heart-shaped grey leaves with mottled patterns, and pinkish undersides. During summer, it may also produce pink, tubular flowers.
Cultivate String of Hearts in well-lit areas with indirect sunlight, avoiding direct exposure. Ensure regular watering during spring and summer, while allowing soil to fully dry between each watering session. In the winter, reduce watering and ensure that the plant is not left sitting in water, which can cause root rot and harm the plant. Apply house plant fertilizer once or twice annually, specifically during the growing season.
Efficiently water the plant in spring and summer, ensuring the soil dries completely between waterings. During autumn and winter, limit watering and avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot. While String of Hearts does not require frequent feeding, it is beneficial to fertilize potted plants twice a year, in spring and summer.
Replant String of Hearts only when its roots outgrow its current pot, transferring it to a slightly larger container. Choose a well-draining compost mixture, such as peat-free cactus and succulent compost, or a blend of peat-free house plant compost and perlite. The best time for repotting is during late spring and summer, when the plant is actively growing.
