Orange Spike Bromeliad (Vriesea 'El Dorado') - Small has a rosette of thick green leaves and produces a showy orange and yellow flower spike.
Vriesea grow epiphytically, usually on the branches of large rainforest trees. It clings tightly to the bark of the tree with its roots. However, it is not parasitic and does not draw nutrients from its tree. The leaves stand as a rather loose, upright rosette and form a watertight funnel in its center, it is a so-called “tank bromeliad”. In nature, rainwater and leaves collect in this funnel and numerous animals and microorganisms use this water reservoir, e.g. frogs for their tadpoles, mosquitoes for their larvae, and many more. The activity of the animals and microorganisms decomposes the foliage that has fallen into the funnel and the Vriesea absorbs the waste products as nutrients. Thus, it is always well supplied with water and nutrients.
Requires bright but indirect light, water the tank and the soil but leave to completely dry in between each watering.
This Bromeliad is great for any tropical setup.
