Fruit Beetle Grubs as Reptile Food

Our Fruit Beetle Grubs are part of the main livefood diet of many reptile and amphibian diets.

They are easy to catch, highly nutritious, but high in fat. Fruit beetle grubs are a great treat for your reptile or amphibian once or twice a week. They are dispatched directly from the breeder and will be gut-loaded before packing to make sure that they are as nutritious as possible on arrival.

Fruit beetle grubs are large, so they are the perfect size for large reptiles. In the store, we use the grubs to feed all of our bearded dragons and other large lizards as a treat.

You'll love them because:

  • We guarantee freshness or your money back.

  • They are farm-bred in ethical conditions.

  • They are pre-fed to ensure your reptile is getting a healthy and nutritious meal.

  • Delivered straight to your door in good time.

Packaging

The grubs arrive in a ventilated plastic tub. Small air holes along the sides provide airflow while keeping the insects safely contained.

In warmer months, the outer cardboard box may have extra perforations for cooling. In colder months, we may include a plain white heat pack to help maintain a suitable temperature during transit.

Feeding Guide

If you want to keep the fruit beetle grubs as nutritious as possible, we recommend feeding them a healthy diet right up until they're used.

  • Offer fresh leafy greens, carrots, squash, or sweet potatoes; these provide hydration and essential nutrients.

  • You can also use specialist insect foods or gut-loading diets to boost their nutritional value for your reptile.

  • Remove any uneaten food daily to keep the enclosure clean and prevent mould or decay.

Well-fed grubs make for excellent food and are far more beneficial, helping support your reptile’s health and digestion. For more information on their diet, please consult our livefood care sheet. If you’re looking for other types of reptile food, we also stock frozen, animal-specific, vegetation, and supplement options.

Animal Suitability

We recommend fruit beetle grubs for the following animal types:

  • Blue Tongue Skinks

  • Bearded Dragons

  • Monitor Lizards

  • Pacman Frogs

Care Instructions

Keep Fruit beetle grubs at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or draughts. Add fresh food at regular intervals to keep them healthy and active.

Avoid overcrowding by providing size-appropriate housing with plenty of hiding spots and room for burrowing.

Looking after your live food properly helps ensure your lizard or other pet gets the best nutrition possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fruit beetle grubs good for reptiles?

Yes, fruit beetle grubs are soft-bodied larvae that many reptiles enjoy as an occasional treat. They’re high in protein and fat, making them great for encouraging picky eaters or boosting the diet of underweight animals. However, they shouldn’t be a staple food because of their rich fat content. Used alongside other livefoods, fruit beetle grubs help provide a varied and nutritious diet for reptiles.

How do I store fruit beetle grubs after delivery?

Keep them in a ventilated container with moist soil or leaf litter. Store at 12–20°C (cool room temperature), and avoid refrigeration below 12°C. Ensure good airflow and prevent surface mold. Stored properly, they last for weeks.

Do fruit beetle grubs only eat fruit?

No, fruit beetle grubs don’t eat only fresh fruit. While they do consume soft, sweet fruits like apple, banana, and mango, they also feed on decomposing organic matter such as rotting wood, leaf litter, and compost. Burying fruit in their substrate helps provide moisture and nutrition, but the grubs forage in the substrate for other decaying plant material as well.

Will fruit beetle grubs attract fruit flies?

Fruit beetle grubs can attract fruit flies if excess fresh fruit or moist leftovers are left in their container. While the grubs themselves don’t directly cause a fruit fly infestation, adding too much fresh fruit as food or letting uneaten fruit rot creates an ideal breeding ground for fruit flies. To avoid this, add only small amounts of fruit, keep the substrate moist but not wet, and ensure good ventilation to prevent mold and decay that attract fruit flies.

What is the difference between adult fruit beetles and fruit beetle grubs?

Fruit beetle grubs are the soft-bodied larvae stage, feeding on decaying plant matter underground. Adult fruit beetles are the hard-shelled, fully grown insects that eat ripe fruit and flowers and reptiles may not enjoy their tough exteriors.

Why choose your fruit beetle grubs over others on the market?

Our live fruit beetle grubs are of good quality, freshly packed, gut-loaded, and part of a trusted range used daily in our own Reptile Centre.
